Common Questions About Starting with Quail

How much space do quail actually need?

Not much at all! Coturnix quail typically need about .5 square foot per bird. They are perfect for small backyards cages or even patio raised hutches.

What do they eat?

They need a high-protein game bird starter (28% protein) until they start laying, when they can transition to Layer feed, same as chickens. They also love occasional treats like fresh greens and mealworms!

Are quail noisy?

Much quieter than chickens! Females are almost silent, while males have a unique 'crow' that sounds more like a wild bird whistle than a wake-up call.

How many eggs do they lay?

Coturnix quail are prolific layers, often providing an egg every day (about 300 per year). Roughly 3-4 quail eggs equal one chicken egg.

Are they good for kids?

Absolutely! Quail are small, easy to handle, and provide fantastic daily lessons on responsibility and biology for younger children.

How long do they live?

Quail have shorter lifespans than chickens, usually living 2-3 years. This makes them a great 'low commitment' entry into homesteading.
